My Skincare Routine & Organic Cotton Plus Silk Pillows

Thank you to Organic Cotton Plus for providing the fabric for this post.

If you follow me on instagram stories, you may remember a couple months ago when I mentioned I was switching up my skincare routine. Maybe I'm just nosy, but I love hearing about other people's skincare, makeup, and beauty routines, so I thought I'd share mine today! Of course, my top three tips for pretty skin are:

1. Drink water,
2. Get enough sleep, and
3. Wear sunscreen every day,

but those are pretty basic and boring, right? It's easy to feel like drinking water is a chore, but I've found that adding some simple luxuries into your daily routine make it feel special, less like a chore and more like a treat! Last year I splurged on a really pretty bkr water bottle that makes me happy every time I fill it up, so I now drink way more water, and I've recently added a little luxury into tips 2 and 3 above, so now I have no excuses!

I've always wanted a silk pillow, since they are supposed to work wonders for your skin and hair, preventing tangles and wrinkles and frizz, but they're so expensive! Recently I realized, um, Allie, you can make a pillow! Organic Cotton Plus has this gorgeous help/silk satin that was just perfect, and they very kindly agreed to send me some for my pretty new pillows! It has the most gorgeous texture and luster, which you can see in the pictures above... it's perfectly nubbly.

As you might have learned in your 3rd grade sewing class, pillows are super easy to make, so you can also have a slightly more luxurious sleep experience! I was going to make a tutorial, but honestly, it's so easy, you don't need one. If you're using a 45" wide fabric, you'll just use the whole yard, but since the Organic Cotton Plus satin is 57" wide, you'll have to trim it down a little, cutting one side off so that your fabric measures 36"x 45". Fold in half (hamburger style), and then there's only two seams to sew--around the two sides of the pillow (side three is the fold) and the hem on the open edge! If you want to be fancy, you can use French seams on the inside--or just serge/zig zag it.

The hemp/silk satin from Organic Cotton Plus is absolutely perfect for these glam pillowcases and since you only need 1 yard per pillow, it works out at a pretty respectable $30 per pillow. Plus, since it's so wide, you'll end up with a little left over and you can make yourself a cute eye mask like I did (or even some silky lingerie, ooh la la) with the remnants! I'm going on an overnight flight soon and I predict this eye mask will be a positive addition to my carry on.

My skincare routine, below the cut...

Although I've basically always worn sunscreen when I'm going to be out in the sun for extended periods, I've never worn a daily sunscreen, since it's usually greasy, it has that weird sunscreen smell, and never layers well with makeup. Recently though, I decided that I really ought to crack down--after all, I'm 28! I need all the anti-aging help I can get! I did a little bit of research and discovered that a lot of people swear by Korean and Japanese sunscreen, which is meant for daily use and so is gentle on skin, works under makeup, etc. I've also gotten about 9000 facebook ads for Soko Glam, so I finally caved and placed an order for fancy sunscreen and a fancy Vitamin C liquid, which is supposed to be brightening as well as increase the effectiveness of sunblocks... and since then I've totally spiraled! I still love my CeraVe (the best drugstore brand) but I've replaced all my Clinique acne care products with new and exciting (and sometimes weird--snail filtrate?!) Korean skincare products.

I think my favorite new product is still the sunscreen--I've never enjoyed wearing sunblock before but I'm totally obsessed now. I even bought a second different brand to compare (it's supposed to be brightening and mattyifying, while the one I currently have has a more dewy finish). I've been refocusing all my makeup-purchasing cravings towards sunblocks--which is crazy since I always considered sunscreen to be a necessary evil.

Before, both morning and evening:
Clinique Acne Solutions Cleansing Bar ($16)
Clinique Acne Solutions Clarifying Lotion ($16.50)
Clinique Acne Solutions All-Over Clearing Treatment ($23)
CeraVe Renewing SA Lotion ($11)
CeraVe Eye Repair Cream ($15)

After:
TonyMoly Pro Clean Soft Sherbet ($16, purchased cheaper at my local TonyMoly store, PM only)
CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser ($11)
CosRX Triple C Lightning Liquid ($27, AM only)
Benton Snail Bee High Content Skin ($18, just started this last week)
TonyMoly Green Tea Watery Essence ($27, purchased cheaper at my local TonyMoly store)
CeraVe Renewing SA Lotion ($11)
CeraVe Eye Repair Cream ($15)
Missha Mild Essence Sun Milk SPF 50 PA+++ ($18, AM only) or a new one, Dr. G Brightening Up Sun SPF 42 PA+++ ($38 but got it on sale!, AM only)
+ sometimes a sheet mask in the evening between my essence and my lotion

The major difference in my new routine are the two essential steps in Korean skincare--a daily sunscreen, and double cleansing at right to remove said sunscreen, along with all the other makeup and grime that accumulates on your skin during the day. If you are interested in switching up your skincare, those would be the two products I would suggest starting with! (You can search Soko Glam by step to look at all the double cleansing and sunscreen options.) I was worried about oil-cleansing since I've tried those natural "just wash your face with almond oil and honey!" routines before to disastrous ends but paired with the super-gentle CeraVe face wash, which removes all the oil cleanser as well as the dissolved makeup and sunscreen, my face feels clean and yet still moisturized.

You may notice something missing in my redesigned routine--the acne care products that I used to rely on! I've found that even without my Clinique acne line, I still have slightly fewer breakouts with this routine. I've been protecting my face as well as hydrating and moisturizing more, and think my skin is better able to take care of itself without the harsher active ingredients in the Clinique products.

My favorite part of the routine is just that--the routine. It's especially nice at night to do the pre-mask part of my routine, then snuggle into my fancy organic silk pillows with a sheet mask on, drink some sleepytime tea, and read a book for half an hour before I finish up and brush my teeth. (Sometimes I also use a teeth whitening strip at the same time and while I do not look cute, I feel very productive.)

I've been really happy with the changes I've made, and if you want to try something out, you can use this referral link to get 20% off your first order at Soko Glam! I would definitely suggest picking up some fancy sunscreen--it's such an easy way to take care of your skin and protect yourself.  I've enjoyed both of the sunscreens I've purchased, and actually, putting on sunscreen feels like a little luxury--like silk pillows at night or a fancy water bottle--rather than a chore. What could be better than taking care of yourself, right?

Do you have a small luxury you won't give up? Would you try snails on your face?

xoxo,
allie

ps: my juicy couture velour robe is another luxury i refuse to give up.
