I intend to fill February with romance and lots of pink to stave off that winter gloom. To start us off? A hot pink coat.
First--hello to my new followers! Thank you so much to Heather Lou for shouting me out--I'm so pleased to have you here. If you'd like to follow me in all the other usual places, you can find me on instagram here, facebook here, twitter here, and Kollabora here. I'd love to be friends!

This is Simplicity 1197, size 8, with no alterations for fit. I have, however, made some style changes, leaving off the collar and changing the buttons for snaps. If I'm perfectly honest, I opted for fabric-covered snaps (which I had never done before!) partly because I liked the clean lines of Kate Middleton's A-line coats with snap closures (seen here in my Kate inspiration post) and partly because if I was going to do buttonholes, I was going to do bound buttonholes, and I've never done those before.

(You'll also notice I skipped the welt pockets. This is my first coat, so, one new skill at a time, okay?)

ETA: The fabric is an Oscar de la Renta wool twill from Mood Fabrics online!
The coat is interfaced with a mid-weight fusible tricot. I checked the supply list from the Grainline Cascade coat and went from there since the Simplicity pattern only interfaces the facings, and I wanted a bit more structure.

It is fully lined with lavender silky poly--and do you see that bit of leopard print?? I did all this sewing during Jungle January, after all!

I debated a big bow like the one on this coat from Kate Spade (which I've had pinned to my inspiration board for years), but ultimately went for a more delicate one after thinking about where I want my wardrobe to be headed. I'm really trying hard to aim for a feminine, classic, retro-modern look while steering away from any of my more costumey inclinations. So: understated bow. As understated as a hot pink bow on a hot pink coat with a lavender lining can possibly be. #barbiegoals

Would you wear a hot pink coat, or do you like to stick to neutrals when it comes to basics like outerwear? I want to make a couple more coats this year, now that I know I can do it! Maybe I'll get around to something camel eventually...
xoxo,
allie
Below, no-sew bows. (and omg that Kate Spade bow yoga jacket? Must. Have.)
ps: how do you like this more styled photo shoot? do you need more gritty coat details or do you prefer pretty pictures with flowers?

Oh my gosh this coat is amazing! The fit, the style, and oh my gosh the color is so wonderful on you. I think you made the right call on the size of the bow.
ReplyDeleteThank you, I love it!
DeleteBeautiful photoshoot and a gorgeous coat. I love brightly coloured coats, black just seems so boring! But I then find that I need several coats in several colours so colours don't clash.
ReplyDeleteYes! Eventually I'll get around to black, but for now I think I'll build my collection of fun colors... :)
DeleteWhat a success for a 1st coat! Your coat is gorgeous and the photos are too. Looking very Jackie O and Kate Middleton with the nude pumps, too. Love it. Personally, I like the gritty in-process photos in addition to the stylized ones. Both serve a purpose.
ReplyDeleteThank you--and thank you for the feedback about the photography :)
DeleteYou make pink look amazing! The coat is really cute. The fabric looks really great with the pattern!
ReplyDeleteThanks so m uch--it's my favorite color to wear and it perks up these grey winter months nicely :)
DeleteI'm swooning over that bow! Bows are my favorite
ReplyDeleteThanks, mine too!
DeleteWhere did you get the fabric?
ReplyDeleteHi Latonya, it's from Mood.
DeleteLovely coat Allie - very smart. What fabric did you use, you described the lining, but not sure what the hot pink is? As for preferred style of photos, I think your posed pics are gorgeous (well done photographer), but it'd be good to have them interspersed with 'in progress' construction piccies for an insight into the sewing technique.
ReplyDeleteIt's an Oscar de la Renta wool from Mood Fabrics online!
DeleteGAH....your coat is sublime! Ever since seeing the film Dior, if I really, really love something it's sublime! I found your blog via Heather...her This Week in Sewing Blogs is the best! I was drawn to your blog because I love your personal style aesthetic and I love your photography!
ReplyDeleteAt first I thought you were wearing a Kate Spade coat! Your more petite bow and the piping you've added make your lovely piece unique to you.
A bright pink coat? YES! I made a bright pink paisley coat and I LOVE it.
A Colourful Canvas: Make It Pink
Adorable! And looks really well made!
ReplyDeleteYour coat is gorgeous and I was wondering if you sewed your dress too?
ReplyDeleteWhat an adorable coat! And this doesn't look like a first coat either. Well done!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely gorgeous, Allie! That pink looks sensational on you and the addition of the bow is pitch perfect. Lovely work!
ReplyDeleteOmg, so cute! I don't think I could ever be brave enough to wear a bright pink coat, but I live in Southern California, so... not doing much coat wearing here anyways. You are totally pulling it off though! I am liking these stylized photo shoots that you've been doing, but I also like to see close up detail shots too :)
ReplyDeleteThe pink looks so fun and cute on you! Unfortunately that color makes me look sallow and sickly. I would probably go for gray or olive or black, but I have so much black! Great job!
ReplyDeleteYou did such a great job, the coat is gorgeous and the colour looks great on you!
ReplyDeletethis is truly stunning. Well done!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! I think I need one of these for Easter. It's always still a little chilly here. And I'm definitely going to consider doing to bow. Awesome job.

ReplyDeleteThis coat is amazing ! And the color suits you so well
ReplyDeleteI don't mean to sound redundant, but that coat IS fabulous! What a lovely inspiration for us all! From the beautiful cut and construction, to the glorious color, your coat is most certainly amazing! Well done!
ReplyDeleteThat color is gorgeous! Great style decisions too, you look very chic indeed :)
ReplyDeleteYour coat really is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteWow, I love it and the colour suits your perfectly. I would definitely wear something like that xx
ReplyDeleteThis is adorable! It really, really suits you- the shape, the style, the color! It's perfect! Personally I love a striking coat... things are so blah in cold weather that you should really jazz them up with color! I made a fuchsia coat a while back and I get more compliments on that than on any other handmade garment in my wardrobe. I think people like seeing something other than black in the winter!
ReplyDeleteI think you made the right call on the welt pockets and the snaps for the coat front. The clean simple lines of the coat is what makes it so wonderful! You did an amazing job on this, it's truly stunning!
ReplyDeleteFantastic coat! I love the simple, clean lines that really let the fabric do tge talking. All winter coats should be a statement colour, leave the neutrals for indoor clothes. The added bonus of a bright coat is that it helps you to be seen on dark mornings/nights....
ReplyDeleteSo efffing fabulous!
ReplyDeleteThis is just so gorgeous! I love the colour, and your photographs and styling are perfect! I'm planning to make a coat soon (when I pluck up the courage) and I think I'm going to go for press studs too as it'll be my first coat.
ReplyDeleteThat coat is to die for! And it looks so fabulous on you!
ReplyDeleteWow, this is a total knock out! I'm sure you're turning heads every time you wear it.
ReplyDeleteOh my lord! This is just stunning. You look like you've stepped out of a Kate Spade commercial. Absolutely love it!!!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! I love it!!!
ReplyDeleteWow! Your coat looks fantastic! I was thinking about that fabric from mood for a coat, but wasn't sure about the colour, but it's amazing!
ReplyDeleteI prefer seeing coat guts to pretty pictures but those pictures sure are purty
ReplyDeleteI'm very late but OMG what a gorgeous coat !!! The color is so intense !!! Love it !!!
ReplyDeleteA french fan.
Oh my goodness, the coat is fantastic, and all the better for your amendments to the pattern. I have been eyeing up this coat pattern, but I was put off by the collar, and wondered if I could leave it out. Clearly it can be done, with great effect! Are there any issues or problems with leaving the collar off, or is it relatively straightforward ( I am a newbie and while I have made some dresses I have never tackled a coat). Any tips would be very gratefully received! Many thanks.
ReplyDeleteIt is VERY easy to leave the collar off! This was my first coat too, so I say go for it!
